Artisan Blu

John Varvatos · 2016

Fresh · Citrus · Floral

John Varvatos Artisan Blu is a fresh, citrusy and green men's fragrance that suits spring and summer days; it has been discontinued. It opens with bergamot, bitter orange, basil and French lavender, with chayote adding a cool edge. Florentine iris and orange blossom absolute turn the heart floral, while cedarwood and patchouli lay a woody base underneath. Aquatic and fruity touches and a light spiciness round it out. Longevity and sillage are rated moderate, and most voters pick summer and spring. It leans towards daily wear, leisure, sport and the office, and less towards evening or nights out. Most voters read it as masculine. Creed Royal Water and Creed Silver Mountain Water have a close profile.

Artisan Acqua

7.5

John Varvatos · 2013

Fresh · Citrus · Aquatic

John Varvatos Artisan Acqua is a fresh, citrusy men's fragrance that leans towards spring and summer days. Longevity and sillage are both moderate, and most voters recommend it for summer and spring. It sits closest to leisure, daily wear and the office, and it also works for sport. Nearly half of voters read it as masculine, though many also call it modern or classic. It opens with mandarin, tangelo and mastic for an aquatic freshness, while galbanum adds a green edge. The heart builds a spicy, herbal frame from basil, lavender and coriander, softened by geranium and jasmine sambac. Moss, patchouli and fir balsam leave a woody base underneath.

Periplo

7.7

L'Erbolario

Fresh · Citrus · Green

L'Erbolario Periplo is a fresh, citrusy and green men's fragrance, rounded out by spice and wood. It opens bright with orange, Calabrian bergamot, lemon and green mandarin orange, while basil, thyme, rosemary and lavender add a green, dry edge. In the heart, nutmeg, coriander and cinnamon leaf bring the spice forward, with jasmine softening it slightly. The base rests on gaiac wood, sandalwood, Virginia cedar and oakmoss, a woody, faintly earthy floor. Longevity and sillage are moderate, though the number of votes is small, so these ratings are only a rough guide. The fresh build suits everyday wear, and it reads clearly masculine. Giorgio Armani Eau pour Homme and Dior Granville have a close profile.

America for Men (Eau de Toilette)

6.3

Perry Ellis · 1996

Fresh · Citrus · Floral

Eau de Toilette

Perry Ellis America for Men Eau de Toilette is a men's scent built on bergamot, sage and pineapple, with a fresh, green, citrusy character; it has been discontinued. Longevity is moderate and sillage weak, so it stays close to the skin and lasts as a light presence through the day. The number of votes is small, so these ratings are only a rough guide. It is made as a men's fragrance. The top notes are bergamot, sage, pineapple, aniseed and fern, giving a fresh, fruity first impression. In the heart, vetiver, juniper, basil and lavender form a green, aromatic backbone. The base of amber, musk, leather and cedar settles it into a woody, leathery warmth. Versace Blue Jeans and Mexx Mexx Man have a close profile.

Gamekeeper

7.5

Bud Parfums

Floral · Green · Spicy

Bud Parfums Gamekeeper is a green, earthy chypre for men, built around oakmoss, petitgrain and patchouli. The notes read as one whole: oakmoss and patchouli give it a woody, damp-earth base, while petitgrain and palmarosa bring a green freshness. Labdanum adds a resinous warmth, musk a soft depth, and orange blossom lightly sweetens the floral side. A spicy touch stays in the background, and overall the scent feels dry, natural and woodland-like. Readers who like classic chypres may also look at Robert Piguet Bandit Suprême and Penhaligon's Belgravia Chypre, which have a close profile.
