Oud

John Varvatos · 2014

Sweet · Spicy · Woody

John Varvatos Oud is a spicy, smoky men's fragrance that leans towards autumn and winter evenings. Longevity is good and sillage moderate, so it stays fairly close to the skin. Most voters pick fall and winter, and evening and night out are the occasions it suits best. Most see it as masculine, with a classic side too. It opens dry and slightly green with juniper berry, tobacco and clary sage. In the heart, clove, cinnamon, saffron and cardamom bring the spice, softened by rose and jasmine. The base of oud, myrrh, frankincense, black leather and amber settles into a sweet, resinous, woody warmth. The smoky, leathery edge stays present throughout.

Grande Notte

8.3

MAD Parfumeur

Sweet · Synthetic · Gourmand

MAD Parfumeur Grande Notte is a dense, sweet, gourmand and resinous fragrance, classed as a men's scent. Its longevity and sillage are both rated strong. Most voters recommend autumn and winter, with spring well behind. It leans towards evenings and nights out, though it also works for leisure. More voters read it as masculine, but a fair share call it feminine. It opens with amber and vanilla, sweet and creamy. In the heart, tonka bean and Spanish labdanum add a resinous, powdery depth, and lavender leaves a spicy, woody edge at the base. The overall impression is warm and gourmand, with a slightly synthetic edge. Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka (Cologne Intense) and Rabanne Invictus Victory Elixir have a close profile.

L'Erbolario Accordo di Ebano is a fresh, citrusy men's fragrance that leans towards leisure and daytime wear. It opens with a bright citrus group of orange, lemon, bergamot and mandarin orange. In the heart, patchouli, lavender and black pepper add a spicy, green edge, softened by ebony and geranium. The base settles on oakmoss, sandalwood and amber, giving it a woody foundation. Its longevity and sillage are moderate. Most voters choose it for leisure and everyday wear, with the office the next most common pick. It reads clearly masculine. Lacoste Essential (Eau de Toilette) and Tom Daxon Sicilian Wood have a close profile.

Guess Night

5.9

Guess · 2013

Fresh · Citrus · Floral

Guess Night is a men's fragrance that pairs a fresh, citrusy feel with a light sweetness, and it suits daily wear and relaxed hours best. The top opens with chili, Malayan elemi and pink grapefruit, so citrus and spice move together. In the heart, Haitian vetiver, geranium and Virginia cedar add a green, woody line. The base of Indonesian patchouli, vanilla and Spanish labdanum softens it and turns it sweeter. Longevity and sillage rate as moderate to weak, so it stays close to the skin and keeps quiet. Voters place it mostly in daytime, leisure and business settings, with night out and evening further behind. It has been discontinued. Guess Night Access and Oscar de la Renta Gentleman have a close profile.
